They have a variety of attacks all which hit VERY hard (early on they can easilly kill you in 2 attacks) and their overhead swing will easilly go right through your shield early on. The best way to deal with them is to lure them to a open area where you can easilly circle them to try and hit them from behind. These guys can be incredibly tough to defeat early on though it is possible, you will first encounter one in undeadburg just down some steps after the tower which contained a crossbow hollow. Kiln of the First Flame (x 5)- The only respawning Black Knights can be found in the path towards the games' final boss. Tomb of the Giants - Located near to the first skeleton beast, near to Patches. The Catacombs - This Knight is found before Pinwheel underneath a trapdoor.
Near where he is is a cropse holding the grass crest shield. When you kill him, he has a small chance of dropping his halberd, which is EXTREMELY powerful early game. Take the elevator up and then head down the cliffs.
Run past them and then run up the nearby hill. They will spit electricity that will most likely one-shot you early on. Work your through the valley past the undead dragon.
Use your Master Key to unlock the pathway to the Valley of Drakes. Go down another set of stairs and turn right and go up another set of stairs. Turn to the left and go down the stairs to where some Hollows are. Use your Master Key to open the door and take the elevator down to New Londo Ruins.
Go down the stairs in Firelink Shrine near where Knight Lautrec is. He can be fought very early in the game using the Master Key. This knight wields a halberd and frequently does a spinning attack that leaves him vulnerable to a quick backstab that will knock him off the cliff for an easy kill. Darkroot Basin - This knight can be found on one of the many cliffs of Darkroot Basin.
